WINSTON CHURCHILL 1. At the Starting Line…Organizing Starts with the Parents THE PROBLEM Sometimes that which drives you crazy about your kids is the one thing you see in yourself, if you take a close look. ” and, “You've got to plan ahead” to your children? And yet, aren't you guilty of the same offenses? If you expect your children to be organized at home, in school, and with their time, then you've got to first look at yourself and see if you are setting a good example. THE STORY I have a son who is always in motion.
We all have options and we all control our time. You first must decide how you want your schedule to look, and then you can arrange activities so it works according to your plan. If you decide Friday is family night, then nobody schedules an activity for that evening. If you say Sundays are sacred, then you won't even consider a class or sport that runs on Sunday mornings. Of course, our schedules change from time to time and we have to be flexible, but understand that as the parent, you have to set the priorities and then live with the schedule you've created.
There are multiple resources for other kinds of activities in the arts and music as well. Think of the younger years (ages four to six) as a time to introduce your child to all sorts of activities. Look for ones with free introductory classes or short-term enrollments so if your child does not take to the activity, you have an easy out. Invariably there will be certain ones that your child loves and wants to keep going back to. But if he doesn't stick to one, don't get discouraged. He's young and can't be expected to master anything at this point.
