Through their presence, they learn how to behave and think like the people with whom they are interacting. Learning their rules, norms, boundaries, and behaviors is the task of ethnographers (Robben and Sluka 2007). The first step in learning local culture and behavioral norms and rules is the establishment of the relationships through which socialization can take place. Even for researchers who are from or who have grown up in the study community, however, the entry process can be complicated because every researcher entering a new field situation must learn a number of new things at the same time.
