For example, Whisman (1997) reported finding over 2,500 citations to marital or marriage satisfaction in the 30-year period from 1967 to 1997; the proliferation continues unabated (see also Bradbury, Fincham, & Beach, 2000). Gottman (1982) once observed that the goal of marital research is to understand satisfaction variance.

Even worse, focusing on individual psychopathology was seen as being co-opted by the medical model and abandoning critical aspects of systems theory, such as circular causality and ‘‘the identified’’ patient. Our paradigm views the study of the interaction of individual and family as an essential domain of family psychology and rejects the early systems theory viewpoint about individual personality and psychopathology on several grounds. First, the individual is every bit as much a system as the family and can be viewed as being made up of various ‘‘smaller’’ biopsychosocial subsystems, as well as being a subsystem of larger biopsychosocial systems.

Accordingly, this behaviorally based model of marriage posited four areas, or task categories, of accomplishment that couples must master. The categories required skills in communication, supportiveness, problem solving, and behavior change. ) The resulting matrix (4 accomplishments by 3 interaction categories) provided a template with which to assess how well a couple was functioning in each of the 12 cells; interventions were designed specifically to correct areas of deficit (Weiss, 1978).
