Operation of the BJT (as distinct from the field-effect transistor which is considered in Chapter 7) has been studied along with its terminal parameters. Graphical BJT characteristics have little more than illustrative value owing to the large spread of transistor parameters, in particular that of the common-emitter current gain (ß). Regions of Operation (cut-off, active, saturated and ON) have been defined; for linear amplifier applications operation should be restricted to the normal active region but, in many switching circuits (see Chapter 6), transistors are driven firmly between the extremes of ON and OFF.
