To my great surprise, no one came up to my room to yell at me. They left me alone. I would never stand in that hallway again, never be forced to tell her my stories. I was happy with my new freedom but sad to have no one to talk to about it. I entered the unfinished part of the attic, where a few old cardboard boxes of my father’s were stacked.

We pulled onto the highway at forty miles an hour and were soon doing seventy in the left-hand lane, the cold air whipping me in the face, freezing my right arm where it leaned on the door. We drove like that for about twenty minutes, then he pulled off the exit to Hempstead Lake State Park. We rolled to a stop near the lake. Nobody around. The wind pretty brisk and most of the leaves off the trees. He turned toward me on the seat and pulled an object out of his jacket pocket. It was a long thin box with foreign writing on it.

My friends and I flipped baseball cards, rode our bikes all over the neighborhood, lay in the grass looking up at the sky, and speculated on the nature of all things. Almost every morning before school, my best friend, Butch Bayliss, and I played ping-pong in his basement, and in the afternoons we’d sit in his kitchen while his mother made us iced tea and fed us homebaked cookies.
