If it is valid to conceptualize cultural traits as units of learned and repeated ways of thinking and acts, it could be useful to rethink those cultural theories of the past (see Hannerz (2010) about “the past that can be used”) that have at their centres the idea that cultural facts are indexes of something else, spatial and temporal chains, for example.
